“I just want to warm my sandwich…but they treat me like I’m a criminal and kick me out.  I don’t want to act like one, but if they keep pushing me….I can”

I met Lavell today in Downtown LA.  I saw people getting agitated at him, so I walked up to him and asked him what was going on.  He had burns and scars on his face so people already judged him before he even opened his mouth.  He explained to me that he had moved from Atlanta, GA and was not getting enough money to live from the state.  He wants to work but has a debilitating seizure disorder that makes it impossible for him to hold a job.

He laughed when I asked him why he isn’t on Skid Row - he could get a hot meal or at least food there, or warm his sandwich.  He explained to me that there are two Downtowns - this one, the one I live in with the nice buildings and the people.  And the other one, the one on Skid Row, that is controlled by gang members who have been around long before he was born.  I asked him how those homeless people could make money - but he said they will always find a way.  They will steal, trade…whatever it takes and rip off the other Skid Row Residents.

We keep forgetting that the homeless people are human beings, we treat them like second class citizens not even trying to help them with a simple request, “Can I please warm up my sandwich?”  Are we really so heartless that we cannot take one minute of time to help someone?  We need to recognize that the judgments we have had for so long about the homeless are not true. They are people, with good intentions and sometimes just need help. I know that is not all of them, but we need to recognize the ones who are good people and just need a helping hand so we can give #life4homeless.  Let's have more #awarenessforamerica.

#awarenessforamerica

What can I do to make a difference?

These are tough times. We can no longer ignore the problem of homelessness. It is up to us to go into our local communities and giving the homeless a hand up, not just a hand out. We live through, we serve through”.

By helping one another in our communities across the country, we can make a significant impact on the homeless problem not just in Los Angeles, but around the world. “We are not looking to give them a handout, we want to give them life".
