Today, we celebrated a wonderful person's birthday, our sister Sonja.
Sonja never plans or asks for anything for her birthday because she says she always ends up getting disappointed. This year, we wanted to change that.
We didn't tell her that we were celebrating, just to hurry and come over. When they arrived, we let them wash and then we shared a meal together with a sweet treat, a card and a small gift. Sonja was so touched, she said she was speechless.
On Skid Row, there is so much focus on the homeless to the point that sometimes with these groups Sonja says she "feels like an animal at the zoo". People don't see her, they just see the hundreds of faceless homeless. We need to stop generalizing and see each person and each story. Let's come together and make #life4homeless.

Since May, a group of prayer warriors from across the US gathers to pray for our nation. The Rejoice in Hope Foundation was not something decided on a whim but after months of patience and prayer. God has put into our lives the most wonderful angels all over the country to support our foundation and our homeless women and children across America. One of those angels is Rose Maye, from Rochester NY.
A successful businesswoman, Rose is represented as an actor and model through Global One Management in Los Angeles, where our founder Sunny Chae is the CEO. Sunny had felt a strong impression from the Lord that Rose was meant to do great things when she joined the prayer group to pray for the nation.
Moved by the Lord to give, Rose and her company, The Uniform Place graciously donated nearly $9000 worth of polo shirts and pants to raise money for the foundation to serve the homeless. We are still in awe at what a wonderful blessing Rose has been to our foundation. Thank you Rose, thank you to The Uniform Place!
You will see these shirts for sale at our event and on our website soon! Donate and show your support to give back and make #life4homeless. #awarenessforamerica
Today we met for our usual Tuesday prayer meeting, however today, Juan and Sonja began a 12 week discipleship journey with founder Sunny Chae to learn how to teach and preach the word to others on Skid Row. Sonja and Juan feel that it is their calling after getting on their feet to continue to minister and help people who are in their situation. God has truly put His heart in Juan and Sonja. Each week, Sonja and Juan have memory verses and homework to study so that they too can grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.
As Juan and Sonja become more comfortable with us, they are also learning that even though they are living in a tent, they do not need to live like homeless. Sunny has been encouraging them to leave Skid Row daily for some quiet time to read the bible and spend time together outside of that environment so that they can be spiritually and mentally strong for those that they need to meet.
Today, the meal was a delicious beef and chicken stir fry with fresh fruit and of course Sonja's favorite V-8 juice. Sonja's birthday is on Thursday so we also celebrated by having homemade brownie sundaes after our prayer meeting. Every time we meet with Juan and Sonja we appreciate how well mannered and well spoken they are. They truly follow Jesus Christ and have a deep knowledge and understanding of the bible. They live through His teachings daily and are humbled because they recognize what God has done in their lives up to this point. This journey has been very eye opening and humbling for our team, we never realized how much our lives would be affected by welcoming Juan and Sonja into our lives.
At the upcoming Worldwide Star Search event, we hope to help the spiritually homeless as well. Give guidance and encouragement to those who are living a comfortable life, yet are not living out the purpose that God created for them. Through this experience our hearts have grown and our eyes opened and we hope to share this with others, whether they are a millionaire or homeless. #awarenessforamerica

After a long week with many issues, Sonja and Juan reached out to us to see if they could stop by and say hello. They wanted to share some concerns with us and with the heat averaging around 100 degrees in LA, we were happy to welcome them and give them a place to shower and rest away from the sun.
Juan was very ill earlier this week due to intense pain from his hip, which needs surgery. He seemed to be moving slower than usual and more quiet. His body has gone through a lot and it's hard to recover when you're in 100 degree heat on the ground in a tent.
They were able to wash and freshen up and we introduced them to some Korean dishes this time, a traditional Korean ginseng soup called, Sam gye tang. Both Juan and Sonja enjoyed the soup eating multiple bowls and then enjoying some ice cream.
Juan was able to practice the songs he will be performing later this month at our black tie gala but he shared that while he loves music and loves to perform he's never performed at this kind of level before. He is very nervous and we told him he needs to pray and just look in the audience for us if he gets nervous for familiar faces cheering him on.
Sonja shared some very disturbing stories of spiritual warfare and fights that happened this week on Wednesday when they had planned to come in and pray. There were numerous fights in front of their tent, drug usage issues with their neighbors all on top of Juan being very ill. Our prayer community across the country all reached out and lifted up Juan in prayer due to his illness. We are so grateful for our community.
Sunny donated more items for Sonja to sell in their store. The store is doing great and giving Juan and Sonja something positive each day. They see themselves in places like Skid Row helping others for many years to come, not as residents anymore but there to serve the ones who did not get the chance that they did. Sonja and Juan will have a #life4homeless
“I just want to warm my sandwich…but they treat me like I’m a criminal and kick me out. I don’t want to act like one, but if they keep pushing me….I can”
"나는 단지 샌드위치를 따뜻하게하고 싶을뿐입니다.하지만 그들은 나를 범죄자처럼 취급하며 나를 쫓아내려합니다.
나는 다른 사람들 처럼 나쁜 행동을 하고싶지 않지만 나를 계속 범죄자로 취급하면 범죄자처럼 행동할수 있죠"
I met Lavell today in Downtown LA. I saw people getting agitated at him, so I walked up to him and asked him what was going on. He had burns and scars on his face so people already judged him before he even opened his mouth. He explained to me that he had moved from Atlanta, GA and was not getting enough money to live from the state. He wants to work but has a debilitating seizure disorder that makes it impossible for him to hold a job.
He laughed when I asked him why he isn’t on Skid Row - he could get a hot meal or at least food there, or warm his sandwich. He explained to me that there are two Downtowns - this one, the one I live in with the nice buildings and the people. And the other one, the one on Skid Row, that is controlled by gang members who have been around long before he was born. I asked him how those homeless people could make money - but he said they will always find a way. They will steal, trade…whatever it takes and rip off the other Skid Row Residents.
We keep forgetting that the homeless people are human beings, we treat them like second class citizens not even trying to help them with a simple request, “Can I please warm up my sandwich?” Are we really so heartless that we cannot take one minute of time to help someone? We need to recognize that the judgments we have had for so long about the homeless are not true. They are people, with good intentions and sometimes just need help. I know that is not all of them, but we need to recognize the ones who are good people and just need a helping hand so we can give #life4homeless. Let's have more #awarenessforamerica.
#awarenessforamerica
Today we experienced why America is so great and saw firsthand how people will help total strangers and come together.
While camping at beautiful Lake Hemet about two hours East of Los Angeles, this morning there was an incident that made my heart stop. At 6am this morning I stepped away from my campsite and my 18 month old Maltese puppy named Blessing followed me without me knowing. I stepped away for less than 15 minutes and when I returned to camp, he was gone. I frantically loooked for him, calling his name. One by one, people I had never met got out of bed to help me. We searched over 600 tent and RV sites by car, golf cart and on foot. Everyone came together to help because this happened in their community. After three hours of searching I came back to my tentsite and we prayed together, then we reached out to our family and amazing prayer group. I have not seen people taking care of people like this in a long time, i had given up believing people like this still exist. Through this time, i felt tremendous peace, when i would usually be panicked and upset. I knew God wanted me to turn to Him and rely on prayer to see Him moving here at camp.
Marina went to put up a Lost Dog sign on the bulletin board and at that moment the phone rang. "Hi Sunny, I have your dog". It was Edward, the kind gentleman who had picked him up thinking he was lost. Edward came back to the site to meet me and I was finally reunited with Blessing!! I tried to give Edward some money but he refused until i insisted and made him take it. I had forgotten how good people are and I thank God for showing that to me again.
God Bless America and Happy 4th of July!!
